I'm not so sure you can count last year's decline in performance against Suggs or any of the defensive positions for that matter. How many starters were injured early on? The opposing offenses take advantage of weaknesses, i.e., positions where starters are out, which in turn limits or disrupts the defensive scheme. Suggs didn't produce the stats he had from previous years because he had to take up some slack from those weeker positions.
Apparently, Suggs is not expendable if the rumor holds true of the franchise tag.

Is it a coincidence that Suggs numbers and impact on the game went down when AD left? The way the Ravens tend to find linebackers (Bart Scott, Edgerton Hartwell, AD) later in the draft, the answer to me isn't necessarily that these guys are all that good. More so, its the d-line, the coaching schemes, and focus on Ray that makes them look better and opens the field for outside linebackers to make plays. Suggs is expendable.

Suggs is a talent, no doubt. Perhaps our defense would lose a step without him, but we thought the same thing about Jamie Sharper, Ed Hartwell, Kemo, AD...the list goes on. If Suggs wants to take a more reasonable contract to stay in B-More, then by all means sign him, but no way we should offer him Freeney money. Perhaps the front office thought he would be willing to accept a "home town discount," but now that he has let it be known that is not the case, franchise him this year, then plan on addressing the issue via the draft in '09.
