Baltimore’s “Quarterback of the Future” Dating Game
December 21st, 2007 by StephenI was watching ESPN t’other day and saw an updated McShay 2008 mock draft. With the 6th overall pick in the draft, the Ravens were slated to pick Brian Brohm. Here’s what McShay had to say (oh, a rhyme - first one’s free, the rest will cost ya):
The Ravens need a fresh start at quarterback but they can’t afford to make another mistake like they did with Kyle Boller. In this scenario, Baltimore would have a difficult decision to make between Brohm and Kentucky’s Andre Woodson.
Since it’s the Christmas season (and I’m not doing anything at work right now), I thought we could play a Ravens first round draft version of The Dating Game. Your host for the game is none other than Brian Billick. With his wealth of experience as a contestant on game shows, why not?
I’ve selected three quarterbacks and have labeled them as QB1, QB2 and QB3. I included as much information for each quarterback as I could without revealing any identities. I pulled together all of the quarterback information from Scout.com and the Sporting News Pro Football War Room. At the end of the post, I’ve attached a poll for you to vote on which ‘contestant’ you’d like to see win the Ravens franchise QB job. After the Seahawks game this upcoming Sunday, I’ll reveal the identities of the mystery quarterbacks.
Ready to play? Good!
QB1
Height: 6 foot 3 inches
Weight: 225 pounds
40 time: 4.78
Strengths: Drop-back passer. Outstanding mechanics. Keeps the ball high and has a high release point. Shows excellent touch and timing on throws. Knows how to change velocities of passes and can lead/hit receivers in stride in the short, immediate and deep zones. Avoids telegraphing throws. Knows how to keep safeties honest and can read coverages. Can make NFL throws. Not afraid to tuck the ball and run. Good mental clock, can feel pressure and know when it’s time to throw the ball or run.
Weaknesses: Has trouble with fast defenses. Needs to make quicker decisions and do a better job of recognizing reads and making accurate throws under pressure. Lacks ideal mobility. Not a great overall athlete. Durability has been an issue throughout his career and concerns exist about his NFL future.
Overall: 472-of-712 passing (66.3%) for 6,751 yards with 41 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Rushed for 5 touchdowns.
QB2
Height: 6 foot 4 5/8 inches
Weight: 221 pounds
40 time: 4.8
Strengths: Tall enough to scan the entire field from the pocket. Reads defenses fairly well and generally finds the open man when given enough time. Can lead receiver when throwing underneath. Has good touch on downfield passes and flashes ability to throw the ball into coverage. Mobile enough to roll out of the pocket and throw well on the run. Shows good poise, is a natural leader on the field and wants the ball in his hands late in games. Can be an effective game manager.
Weaknesses: Doesn’t have a cannon for an arm, doesn’t put great zip on downfield passes and gets into trouble when throwing into tight coverage. Lacks ideal mobility. Has some problems buying time in the pocket, leading to some poor decisions. Not an great open-field runner. Durability has been an issue throughout his career and concerns exist about his NFL future.
Overall: 419-of-693 passing (60.5%) for 4,806 yards, 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
QB3
Height: 6 foot 4 inches
Weight: 219 pounds
40 time: 4.84
Strengths: Possesses prototypical NFL quarterback size. Tall, with adequate bulk and room on the frame to add another 10 or so pounds. Displays very good arm strength, and can drive the ball downfield vertically. Can fit the ball into tight spots in the intermediate passing game. Gets good zip on deep out throws. Gets set quickly, shows the quickness to avoid pocket pressure and has enough speed to run for first downs consistently if unaccounted for. Runs hard and isn’t afraid to drop his shoulder. Comfortable throwing on the run. Tough enough take shots in the pocket when following through on a throw. Durable player throughout his career.
Weaknesses: Must continue to develop as a leader. Streaky as a passer. Displays trouble with throws that require touch, specifically in laying the ball in-between line backers and defense backs in cover-2 or cover-3 looks. When he misses a target, it tends to be high. Has the tendency to hold on to the ball too long. Needs to do a better job reading coverages while dropping back. Has too many short throws batted down at the line. Gets happy feet in the pocket and will telegraph some of his throws. Trusts his arm too much at times and tries to fit the ball into tight spots when he shouldn’t under pressure. Doesn’t feel comfortable selling pump fakes.
Overall: 464-of-760 (61.0%) for 5,651 yards, 39 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Rushed for 2 touchdowns.
Selection time!
The results are in and it’s time to make your pick. Who will it be? QB1? QB2? QB3?
Stay tuned to find out!
